Bury products

Use bury when you want products to remain searchable, but rank below the rest of the result list. This is useful for out-of-stock products, clearance assortments, or low-priority attribute values.

If you want the background first, read Bury products.

Before you start

Make sure you know:

  • which Experience should control the rule
  • which field and value should be ranked lowest
  • whether the rule should apply broadly or only under specific conditions

How to create a bury rule

  1. Open Playground for the segment you want to edit.
  2. Open the Experience where the bury rule should apply. If needed, update the conditions first so the rule only affects the intended searches or category pages.
  3. Go to the Playground area where the Experience business rules are configured and open the Bury configuration. Depending on the current Playground layout, this appears in the same editing flow as the other Effects / Smart Boost rules.
  4. Add a new bury rule.
  5. Select the field you want to use.
  6. Select the value that should trigger the bury behavior.
  7. Save the Experience and review the preview results in Playground.
  8. Publish the changes when the preview looks correct.

Example setups

Bury out-of-stock products

  1. Create a bury rule.
  2. Select the In stock field.
  3. Select the value false.
  4. Save and verify that in-stock products remain above sold-out products in the preview.

Bury a category

  1. Create a bury rule.
  2. Select the Category field.
  3. Choose the category you want to rank lowest.
  4. Save and verify that products from that category move below the rest of the matching products.

What to expect after saving

  • A product is buried when it matches any active bury rule.
  • Multiple bury rules do not stack extra demotion.
  • Buried pinned products still stay together at the top of the buried group.
  • Changes only affect live traffic after publication.

Tips

  • Use descriptive rule names so publication overviews are easy to review.
  • Prefer one clear bury rule per business reason instead of combining several intentions into one broad rule.
  • If products should disappear entirely, use a different mechanism than bury. Bury only changes ranking.
