Bury products

Bury lets you rank products lowest instead of hiding them. Use it when a product should still be returned in search or category pages, but should appear after the products you want customers to see first.

Typical use cases include:

  • out-of-stock products that should stay searchable
  • clearance or low-priority categories
  • products with values that are still valid, but should rank lower than the rest of the assortment

How bury works

Each bury rule matches one field/value pair, such as:

  • In stock = false
  • Category = Clearance
  • Color = Neon green

If a product matches any active bury rule, Ecommerce Search moves it below the non-buried results. Matching more than one bury rule does not push the product down multiple times.

Pinned products can also be buried. In that case, they still stay at the top of the buried group, but they move below all non-buried products.

When to use bury instead of other tools

Use bury when you want to:

  • keep products visible, but less prominent
  • reduce the visibility of products with lower business value
  • avoid manually pinning large numbers of preferred products above unwanted ones

Use other tools when you want to:

  • remove products from results entirely by changing the indexed data or filters
  • promote products with pinning or relevance/commercial settings
  • change the available result set with filters, facets, or experience conditions

Supported rule inputs

In the current bury setup, you can choose from:

  • stock status
  • categories
  • string-based product attributes that are available in the segment

The exact list depends on the fields configured for your segment.

Publication behavior

Bury changes are draft changes until you publish them. Saving a bury rule in Playground updates the draft configuration, and publishing makes the new bury setup active for live search traffic.

Common patterns

Bury out-of-stock products

This is the most common use case. Customers can still find sold-out products when they search precisely, but in-stock products stay ahead in the default ordering.

Bury a low-priority category

Use this when a category should remain searchable, but should not compete with the main assortment during campaigns or seasonal launches.

Bury a specific attribute value

Use this for values such as discontinued colors, older collections, or products with low commercial priority that should not dominate the result list.
