Background removal

BAIA can remove the background from an image in DAM, leaving the subject on a transparent background. The result, a cutout, is saved as a new file in the same folder as the original. This makes it possible to use the same product image on white for a marketplace, on a brand color for a campaign page, or as a transparent overlay in a banner, without editing each version by hand.

Removing the background

Navigate to the image in the UI, open the Transformations tab and press Remove background. Removing the background requires permission to add files to the folder of the original image.

When the cutout is ready, it appears in the file grid and is selected automatically, so its details are shown in the right panel. The cutout and the original link to each other, which shows the connection between them. Each image can have one cutout. The original is never modified. The background cannot be removed from a cutout or from a file that is not an image.

DAM sends the image to background removal at no more than 6,000 × 6,000 pixels. The cutout of a larger original is therefore smaller than the original.

The cutout is an ordinary DAM file, stored as WebP. It is named after the original with -cutout added, so a-card.png becomes a-card-cutout.webp. Transformation functions with a WebP or Png output format keep the transparency, while Jpeg flattens it onto a white background.

Automatic background removal is accurate for most images, but fine hair, glass, thin structures and light subjects on light backgrounds can produce imperfect edges. A busy or ambiguous scene, where it is unclear which object is the subject, can also lead to the wrong part of the image being kept or removed.

Every cutout is expected to be reviewed by the person responsible for the result before it is published.

Provider

BAIA uses Photoroom to remove backgrounds. When a cutout is requested, the image is sent to the Photoroom API, and the result is returned to DAM and stored there.

Credits and usage

Background removal uses a credit system. Each cutout is paid for per image and uses credits from a background removal limit of its own, separate from the limits for chat, agents and search. When the credits for the month are used up, further requests are rejected until the next month begins or the limit is raised.

Because every cutout uses credits, background removal is never applied automatically. It always requires an explicit action on a specific image. Requesting background removal for an image that already has a cutout returns the existing cutout and uses no credits.
