Stemming Overrides
Warning
Stemming overrides are an advanced feature that should only be used if necessary and in cases like those described below.
Stemming
Stemming is like a language shortcut for a search tool. It simplifies or reduces words to their basic form. For instance, if you search for "running," the search tool, using stemming, might also look for "run," "runner," and "ran" to make sure it finds all the related information.
Stemming overrides
Stemming overrides are rules that act as a safety net in the search tool. They prevent certain words from being overly simplified during the stemming process. These rules ensure that words with different meanings don't get wrongly transformed into the same basic form. They're like special instructions to maintain the uniqueness of specific words in a search. Learn more
Example - "Training" to "Train" or "Trained"
Imagine you're looking for information about "training." Stemming, as a search magic trick, ensures that even if you type "train" or "trained," you still get results about "training." It helps you find what you need, regardless of slight variations in how you type the word.
But the stemmed word ‘train’ can have 2 different meanings: a train (noun) - a vehicle on the railroads or; to train (verb) an activity. So in order to prevent training being stemmed to train and show search results for both train vehicles and training equipment, you need to create an override for the word training.
Before stemming
Search results showing training equipment and trains, from the search phrase "Training"
